Flying in Bodø, Norway Under the Midnight Sun

A Paragliding Experience Like No Other

Living in Bodø, I’ve come to appreciate how the midnight sun transforms everything—especially in the air. Some nights, I’ll hike up to Kaiservarden around 11 PM with my wing, and by 1:30 AM I’m soaring in silence over the sea, the light still warm and golden as if the day never ended. One night, I remember turning over the ridge and seeing the coastline stretch endlessly under that glowing sky. No shadows, no rush—just still air and a horizon that never darkens. As I’ve shared in my videos, it really does feel like dreaming with your eyes open. The midnight sun isn’t just a phenomenon here—it’s part of the rhythm of life, and every flight under it feels a little unreal.

Where Daylight Never Ends

Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Bodø is one of the few places on Earth where the sun never sets for weeks. From June 4 to July 8, the city experiences the midnight sun, a natural phenomenon where daylight persists 24 hours a day. This creates a dreamlike environment for paragliding—extended golden light, calm air, and virtually limitless flying windows.

The Kaiservarden Launch: Bodø’s Signature Spot

Paragliders in Bodø typically launch from Kaiservarden, a 366-meter plateau above the city that offers sweeping views of the fjords, the Lofoten Wall, and the Norwegian Sea. Flights here are characterized by smooth laminar wind, gentle thermals, and long glides in the cool Arctic air. The soft, low-angle sunlight creates near-perfect photography and visibility conditions—even at 2:00 in the morning.

The Midnight Sun Flight Festival

One of the most anticipated events of the season is the Midnight Sun Flight Festival, held annually in late June. The 2025 edition is scheduled for June 20–23, drawing over 150 pilots from around the world. The festival includes:

  • Guided group flights from Kaiservarden and nearby peaks
  • Safety and weather briefings
  • Ground handling and SIV clinics
  • Gear exhibitions from top brands
  • Social activities and camping with fellow flyers

Thanks to 24-hour daylight, pilots can fly at midnight, hike to takeoffs late in the evening, and experience a continuous golden-hour atmosphere that photographers and adventurers dream of.

Why Fly Here?

What sets Bodø apart isn’t just the scenery—it’s the surreal environment. With no nightfall, you can plan longer flights without time pressure. The air is stable, visibility is excellent, and the Arctic silence makes the experience deeply meditative.

Plan Your Arctic Paragliding Adventure

Whether you’re a seasoned XC pilot or a passionate hike-and-fly enthusiast, Bodø in the midnight sun season is a must-fly location. Combine adventure, nature, and a rare celestial phenomenon in one unforgettable flight.
